남아공 포체프스트룸대학, 오정현 목사 박사학위 “취소 않을 것”

 

부분적으로 논문 표절 문제로부터 자유롭지 않으나 전체적으로는 학문적 기여도가 뚜렷하기에 오 목사에게 수여한 박사학위를 취소하지 않겠다는 입장을 표명한 것이다. 

 

대학 측은 이어 "이제 오정현 박사는 표절과 관련, 논문에서 지적된 부분을 수정하기 바란다. 이사회가 논문에서 수정되어야 할 항목으로 지적한 부분은 오정현 박사에게 (이미) 전달했다"며 "오정현 박사는 수정된 논문의 사본을 제출하기 바란다. 논문은 교수진의 검토를 거쳐야 한다. 또한 (논문에서 출처를 밝히지 않고 인용한 참고문헌의 저자들 중) 생존하고 있는 저자들에게도 사과 편지를 보내기 바란다"고 전했다. 

 

앞서 대학 측은 오 목사 논문 표절 검증 절차에 관한 설명도 했다. 대학 측은 "지난 1년 간, 여러 사람으로부터 논문표절 의혹에 관한 질의를 받았다. 본 사안을 매우 신중하고 철저히 다뤘다"면서 "신학부 교수진으로 구성된 특별위원회가 다방면으로 검토했고, 그 후 총괄경영위원회 및 캠퍼스의 최고이사회가 최종 승인했다. 사안의 중대성 및 영향을 고려해 이사회의 최종 결정을 즉시 알린다"고 말했다. 

 

한편, 오정현 목사는 앞서 사랑의교회 당회측이 그의 박사학위를 놓고, ‘논문 표절’이라는 결론을 내리자 박사학위를 내려놓고, 당분간 자숙하기로 한 바 있다. 대학 측의 이번 결정에 오 목사가 어떻게 대응할지 귀추가 주목되고 있다. 아래는 대학 측의 입장 전문. 

 

Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

This message serves to inform you about the decision taken on 29 May 2013 by the Senate of the North-West University about alleged plagiarism by Dr John Jung-Hyun Oh in his thesis submitted to the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 1998.

 

Over the past year the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University has received various complaints and enquiries from a number of parties about the matter.  These were regarded extremely seriously.  The matter was investigated extensively by a specialist committee of the Faculty of Theology, after which their report was considered by both the Extended Management Committee, and on the recommendation of the Extended Management Committee, by the Senate Committee of the said campus. Because of the seriousness of the matter and the implications for the university as a whole, it was deemed necessary that the university Senate pronounce on the matter, which prompted the discussion and decision yesterday at a Senate meeting in Mafikeng.

 

While it is clear to the Senate that plagiarism indeed occurs in the thesis, Senate decided not to withdraw the thesis and the 1998 award of the PhD degree to Dr Oh, because the thesis still constitutes an original and significant contribution to the discipline, even if all the sections where plagiarism was identified, are removed.  Dr Oh are required to correct each and every occurrence of plagiarism in the thesis.  These corrections have been stipulated by Senate and provided to Dr Oh.  This must be done to the satisfaction of the Faculty and Dr Oh must submit corrected copies of the thesis to the Faculty.  He will furthermore be required to address letters of apology to the surviving authors whose works have been plagiarised.
